Cozy and comforting gluten-free hand pies filled with a blend of spiced sweet potatoes and tart apples. These dairy-free, freezer-friendly treats are easy to make and perfect for holiday desserts, snacks, and gluten-free baking that the whole family will love.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups cooked and mashed sweet potato (about 1 medium sweet potato)
- 2 medium tart apples (e.g., Granny Smith), peeled, cored and diced
- 1/4 cup coconut sugar or brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon tapioca starch or arrowroot powder
- 1 package (about 7 ounces) gluten-free pie crust dough, thawed if frozen (store-bought or homemade)
- 2 tablespoons dairy-free milk (e.g., almond, oat, or coconut) for brushing
- 1 tablespoon turbinado sugar or coarse sugar, optional for sprinkling
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
-
In a medium bowl, combine the cooked mashed sweet potato, diced apples, coconut sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and tapioca starch. Mix well until fully combined. Set the filling aside.
-
On a lightly floured surface using gluten-free flour, roll out the pie crust dough gently to about 1/8-inch thickness if needed.
-
Using a 4 to 5-inch round cutter or a small bowl, cut circles out of the dough. Gather scraps and re-roll as necessary to get 8 circles.
-
Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the sweet potato and apple filling onto the center of half of the dough circles, leaving a border around the edges.
-
Moisten the edges of the dough circles with a little water. Place the remaining dough circles on top of the filling to form hand pies.
-
Press edges firmly with your fingers, then crimp edges with a fork to seal completely.
-
Place the hand pies on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops lightly with dairy-free milk and sprinkle with turbinado sugar if using.
-
Cut a couple of small slits in the tops of each pie to allow steam to escape during baking.
-
Bake for 22 to 25 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
-
Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
-
Serve warm or at room temperature. These pies can also be frozen after baking—wrap individually and freeze up to 2 months. Reheat in a 350°F (175°C) oven until warmed through.

Texture Expectations
Gluten-free baked treats like these Spiced Apple and Sweet Potato Hand Pies offer a unique texture experience compared to traditional wheat-based pastries. Expect a tender yet slightly crumbly crust that achieves delightful flakiness without gluten’s elasticity.
The filling combines smooth, creamy mashed sweet potato with tender, lightly chunky cooked apples thickened by tapioca starch, creating a cohesive, non-gummy texture.
Because gluten-free dough can be more delicate, gentle handling during rolling and shaping helps prevent cracking. Minor cracks won’t affect the taste and will bake into a melt-in-your-mouth crust.
When reheated from frozen, the crust softens slightly but maintains its pleasant texture best when warmed in the oven rather than the microwave, preserving the crisp exterior and cozy, spiced filling.
